Schengen Visa Insurance for Senior Travelers: Age Limits and Coverage

April 22, 2025·4 min read·By Ombrela editorial

Senior travelers face age-related plan limitations and higher premiums for Schengen insurance. Here is how to find the right coverage.

Senior travelers — typically defined as 65 or 70 and older — face additional considerations when buying Schengen visa insurance. Premium costs rise sharply with age, available plans narrow, and coverage details become more important.

Age-Based Plan Availability

Most standard Schengen plans cover travelers up to age 79. Plans for 80-89 exist but are limited. Plans for 90+ are very limited and typically capped at lower coverage levels.

Premium Cost by Age

  • Age 65-69: 2-3x the premium of a 30-year-old
  • Age 70-74: 3-5x
  • Age 75-79: 5-8x
  • Age 80+: 8-15x

Pre-Existing Conditions

Most senior Schengen plans exclude pre-existing conditions but offer acute onset coverage for sudden flare-ups. For diabetes, hypertension, or heart conditions managed at home, verify the acute onset coverage limits before traveling.

Recommended Senior Plans

IMG Patriot Platinum (covers to age 89), Atlas Travel Premium (to age 79), Safe Travels Elite (to age 89), Trawick International Safe Travels Voyager. Each has different age tiers and coverage specifications.

Activity Restrictions

Some senior plans exclude age-related activities that younger travelers can do — like horseback riding, skiing, or extended hiking. Read the activity exclusions section if you plan any of these.

Bottom Line

Senior travelers should never settle for the cheapest plan that meets the €30,000 minimum. Coverage details matter much more after 65. Ombrela specializes in plans for senior Schengen travelers.
