Dental and Vision Coverage in Travel Insurance: What's Included

July 2, 2025·4 min read·By Ombrela editorial

Most travel insurance excludes routine dental and vision care, but acute injuries are covered. Here is what you can claim.

Dental and vision care occupy an unusual position in travel insurance: routine care is universally excluded, but acute injuries are typically covered. Understanding this distinction prevents both surprise denials and missed claims.

What's Typically Excluded

Standard exclusions across virtually all travel insurance: routine dental cleanings and exams, routine eye exams and prescriptions, cosmetic dental procedures, glasses and contact lens replacement (general wear), planned dental work (crowns, fillings, root canals).

What's Typically Covered

  • Dental emergencies: Acute infections, abscesses, severe toothache
  • Dental injuries: Broken teeth from falls or accidents
  • Eye injuries: Foreign objects, lacerations, chemical exposure
  • Acute eye conditions: Sudden vision loss requiring emergency treatment
  • Emergency dental work: Treatment to relieve pain or prevent infection

Coverage Limits

Even when covered, dental and vision benefits have specific limits — typically $500-$2,500 per incident. Some plans have separate per-trip aggregate limits. Verify limits before traveling.

Replacement Glasses and Contacts

Standard travel insurance doesn't replace lost or broken glasses/contacts from normal wear. However: covered if lost as part of a covered baggage claim, covered as emergency replacement after eye injury, covered if specifically included in plan riders.

Pre-Existing Dental Conditions

Just like medical pre-existing conditions, pre-existing dental issues are typically excluded. If you have a known cavity that becomes infected during your trip, coverage may be denied. Get dental work done before traveling.

Bottom Line

Travel insurance covers dental and vision emergencies, not routine care. Plan accordingly: get dental check-ups before travel and carry spare glasses/contacts. Ombrela explains what your specific plan covers for dental and vision.
